"Be still and know that I am God"

Adoration with Endow
Adoration with Endow

Open my eyes to see, Lord, the ways you slowly, surely move through my days and in my heart...

Help me notice every sign of how you're with me, walking by my side and answering my prayers...

Keep me grateful for the gifts I have and mindful of the ways you keep your word to guide and guard me, keeping me and holding me snug in the palm of your own hand...

Give me a grateful heart, Lord, for all I have and all you promise and especially for the gift of your strong, abiding love...
Austin Fleming

I am so grateful for the gift of God's strong and abiding love, and for the love of each of you. I write today from my 3rd Chemotherapy treatment and feel the strength you all so generously give! Thank you!

St James Vocal Academy
St James Vocal Academy in New York City

And so it has begun, Lord:
the week we call Holy.

One thing I know, Lord - for certain:
I could be a whole lot holier than I am right now…

But just how holy do I want to be?

I want to be holy enough to stand before you without shame or embarrassment…

I want to be holy enough to know that I've helped the poor - and generously so…

I want to be holy enough to know that my intentions and desires, my dreams and schemes, are just, pure and honest...

I want to be holy enough to love you with a heart cleansed of selfishness and pride…

I want to be holy enough to recognize my lack of holiness and to ask the help of your grace whenever and wherever I need it...

Just a few days left in Lent, Lord:
a few more chances to be holy in this season of praying, fasting and serving the needs of others...

and then three days of prayer so holy they are but one-day-in-three:
the Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter

Three days inviting me to enter into the mystery of all mysteries, the mystery of Jesus...

Three days to remember with the whole Church how Jesus suffered, died, was buried and rose that we might have life and have it to the full...

Three days that will not come 'round again until a year from now, three days that promise more than I could ever hope to promise in return...

I wish all of you a blessed Easter and a happy break!

On the Church calendar, today, is the Feast of the Annunciation. What is that? Well, if you count 9 months from today you'll find yourself on December 25 - Christmas and the birth of Jesus. This feast celebrates the moment when, with the message from the angel Gabriel, Mary conceived the Christ Child in her womb. Here is how Luke's gospel tells the story:

The angel Gabriel was sent to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. And coming to her, the angel said, "Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High...

Here is a prayer in the spirit of today's feast.

Sometimes, Lord,
my heart aches for a message,
looks for an angel,
strains and listens for
a much-needed word from you...

My heart waits to hear what you speak
to my life and my worries,
my fears and confusion,
my decisions and choices...

My heart waits
for tidings of encouragement
and for a word of wisdom and counsel
to strengthen and empower me,
to guide my way and guard me...

My heart waits to hear you say,
Don't be afraid... I'm with you...
I'm always with you... I'll never leave you...
I'm beside you, before you and behind you,
above you, below you, within you...

My soul strains to hear you say:
You've found favor with me...
I care for you... I care about you...
I watch out for you...
I keep a place in my heart for you,
a place to hold you...
Send me an angel, Lord:
come speak in my heart
the word I need to hear...

Speak to me as you did to Mary:
when I'm not expecting you...
when I'm confused and don't understand...
when I'm not sure what you want of me...
when I'm afraid of what tomorrow may bring...

Fill my heart with your grace, Lord,
to help me welcome every messenger
who comes to speak your word to me,
the word you know I need to hear...
Amen.

A variation on an old Irish prayer-one day late:-)

Good and gracious God,

Give me friends who love me for who I am,
to love in return with all my heart...

Keep burning before my faltering steps
the light you hold on the path I walk...

Keep strong in my heart what faith I have
and help me deepen my trust in you...

May I ever be grateful for the life that's mine
and lean on you when times are hard...

Make me joyful in all the gifts that are mine
and quick to share with those in need...

May I rise every morning to do your will
and may twilight find me peaceful and still...
Amen.

We have exciting high school news! Two of our 8th grade students, Hannah Salameh and Kate Barry, have earned top honors on their entrance exams at Cathedral Catholic High School. And by top honors, I mean perfect scores! And they were two of only seven in ALL students testing to earn this distinction. I'm very proud of these two and all of our 8th graders. We are making quite a name for ourselves at CCHS-5 in the top 20 last year and now 2 of 7 this year!! Wow! I am assuming this means they have been accepted:-) and I look forward to sharing acceptance news regarding all of our graduates with you in the next week or two.

Jr. High Drama class presents the hilarious comedy The Suessification of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Shakespeare meets Dr. Seuss, and the results are lots of fun. The play will be presented to the school next Monday, March 16th at 1:15 in the parish hall. There will also be an evening performance in the hall at 6pm. Please come and watch the junior high students frolic through a silly story about four young lovers, a sprite, fairies, and a love struck funny donkey head. All are welcome!

"Be still and know that I am God"

My deepest love and appreciation to all of you for the many expressions of support! I am blessed to be in this community! It seems as if today's Jesus Calling by Sarah Young is written just for me, but the reality is that we all have things going on in our lives that cause worry. The way this community shares and comforts each other is true grace. I hope that you will all also take comfort in Jesus' words today-I do!

Refuse to worry! In this world there will always be something enticing you to worry. That is the nature of a fallen, fractured planet: Things are not as they should be. So the temptation to be anxious is constantly with you, trying to worm into your mind. The best defense is continual communication with Me, richly seasoned with thanksgiving. Awareness of My Presence fills your mind with Light and Peace, leaving no room for fear. This awareness lifts you up above your circumstances, enabling you to see problems from My perspective. Live close to Me! Together we can keep the wolves of worry at bay.

"Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?" Luke 12:25-26

"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstance, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

SJA Wears Pink for Mrs. Dunn

I feel such love! and can’t thank you enough. The prayers and support have touched me deeply and have been a great support. Did you see my beautiful picture? This will keep me in smiles forever!

I wish I had a little more to tell you about what the future holds for me. I don’t seem to be able to do anything the easy way:-) I have been working on educating myself and gathering second (and third:-) opinions-with a great deal of professional support from some of our amazing families! I’m hoping this Friday will be my final stop before making a decision on treatment and then I’ll get moving! Please keep the prayers coming, right now that I make a good decision and then onto healing. Love to you all.

3rd Grade Valentines - Baby Shower

A staple in my go-to prayers, so pertinent today:

If you would, Lord, calm the seas I sail,
still the waves that rock my boat
and hush the winds
that pull me off my course…

But let me not forget that while
you sometimes choose to calm the storm
you often let it rage and calm instead
the one who rides it out…

I pray safe passage today
through all its squalls and gales to the harbor of that peace, O Lord,
that's only yours to give…

Irish Blessing
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

This beautiful blessing was included in the memorial program for Christine Beerman, mom of 7th grader Jake. While we are devastated at the loss for Jake, his dad and this community, we were so fortunate to know her and to celebrate her beautiful life yesterday with a memorial mass. Our Catholic traditions have the power to bring incredible peace and grace and that was in full evidence yesterday. Thank you to all who helped care for the family and for each other, for your prayers and support, for your love.

Why I Love SJA by Molly 5th grade

My experience at Saint James Academy has always been positive. In my six years, I have been met with friendly teachers, smiling faces, and genuinely nice kids. But I'm pretty sure this year has made the top three. Mrs. Mott is fabulous and I feel like I'm learning like crazy!!!! Our music program is one of the highlights for me. Mrs. Oldham gets the whole class rocking, even the boys! And, library and computers are always fun.

Going to Mass every Friday is a real privilege. I go to an amazing school and learn about my faith! It doesn't get any better than that! Saint James is going to give me the foundation for my life: socially, mentally, musically, spiritually, athletically, academically, and emotionally. Saint James Academy is not just a school to me, it's a faith-filled home and community that will help me grow and stay with me my entire life.

Thank you so much Mom and Dad for sending me here, and helping me live God's word.
