"Be still and know that I am God"

Principal for a Day
Principal for a Day

Lord, tap me on the shoulder and remind me that you're here...

Tug on my sleeve till I stop, turn and look you in the eye...

Get my attention, Lord - and hold it - till I've spent some time with you today in prayer...

Behind and before you encircle me and rest your hand upon me...

- Psalm 139

I'm not sure I've shared this prayer with you previously, but it sure seems to make sense today. I hope that you have all heard my good news and understand my deep appreciation for the support you show me. Last week I had an MRI that showed no tumor! I had a little anxiety:) when the MRI also showed a spot on my liver. This week a scan of my liver showed that the spots are nothing to worry about-probably with me since birth. The best news is the plan going forward-no more chemo! I will meet with the surgeon on Thursday to see what/when the surgery will look like and I will follow it with radiation over the summer. My prognosis is excellent. I am so grateful for the many prayers for healing and the strength to beat this crazy disease. You have fed my body and my soul and kept my faith strong-in all the chaos.

BLESSING IN THE CHAOS

To all that is chaotic in you,let there come silence.

Let there be a calming of the clamoring, a stilling of the voices that have laid their claim on you, that have made their home in you, that go with you even to the holy places but will not let you rest, will not let you hear your life with wholeness or feel the grace that fashioned you.

Let what distracts you cease. Let what divides you cease. Let there come an end to what diminishes and demeans, and let depart all that keeps you in its cage.

Let there be an opening into the quiet that lies beneath the chaos, where you find the peace you did not think possible and see what shimmers within the storm.

Dear God,

When I can't see you,
remind me that you never lose sight of me...

When I can't hear you,
remind me that you never miss a word I pray...

When I can't reach you,
remind me that you hold me in your arms...

When I can't find you,
remind me that you walk right by my side...

When I can't trust you,
remind me that you're my surest hope...

And when I can't, well, whatever...
Remind me that you can, you do and you will - in love and without fail. Amen.

"Be still and know that I am God"

8th grade class gift to SJA
Mary's Garden Makeover

From today's Jesus Calling by Sarah Young:

So Many Blessings
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful.
-Hebrews 12:28

Let Me teach you how to be thankful. First, think about all the things you have to be thankful for-home, family, friends, food, clothes, stuff. Then, think about how each of these things is a gift from Me.

As the sun rises, remember that today is a gift from Me. As you get out of bed, think about the gift of a healthy body. As you gather up your work and prepare for the day, be grateful for your abilities and talents. Try to count the many good things I have filled your life with. Is it twenty-five? Fifty? One hundred? I dare you to try to count all My blessings.

The secret to being thankful is thinking about all the good things in your life-and then remembering that these are all gifts from Me.

And it's true-so many blessings! One of our most precious is the 2nd graders making their First Communion this weekend. Please keep them in your prayers as they celebrate this special sacrament. Thank you Ms. Williams and parents for the beautiful preparation of our students.

Mark 12:28-31: A teacher of the law was there who heard the discussion. He saw that Jesus had given the Sadducees a good answer, so he came to him with a question: "Which commandment is the most important of all?" Jesus replied, "The most important one is this: 'Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second most important commandment is this: 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' There is no other commandment more important than these two." What an important message as we invite you to attend our meeting tonight:

Tonight! Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) Update
Five years ago, SJA adopted the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, which prevents bullying in schools and addresses bullying issues school-wide, in our classrooms, with individuals and within the larger community. What is bullying? Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself. Bullying can take many forms, such as physical, verbal harassment, spreading false rumors, excluding individuals from a group, or sending nasty messages on a cell phone or over the internet. The rare occurrences of bullying at SJA are taken seriously and are addressed with all involved individuals and their parents. Regular class meetings are held with the students to discuss relevant age appropriate topics and to reinforce expected behaviors. Please join us for an informational parent meeting tonight, Wednesday, April 22nd, at 6:00PM in the school library to share further elements of the OBPP program and to have questions addressed.

Adoration with Endow
Adoration with Endow

Open my eyes to see, Lord, the ways you slowly, surely move through my days and in my heart...

Help me notice every sign of how you're with me, walking by my side and answering my prayers...

Keep me grateful for the gifts I have and mindful of the ways you keep your word to guide and guard me, keeping me and holding me snug in the palm of your own hand...

Give me a grateful heart, Lord, for all I have and all you promise and especially for the gift of your strong, abiding love...
Austin Fleming

I am so grateful for the gift of God's strong and abiding love, and for the love of each of you. I write today from my 3rd Chemotherapy treatment and feel the strength you all so generously give! Thank you!

St James Vocal Academy
St James Vocal Academy in New York City

And so it has begun, Lord:
the week we call Holy.

One thing I know, Lord - for certain:
I could be a whole lot holier than I am right now…

But just how holy do I want to be?

I want to be holy enough to stand before you without shame or embarrassment…

I want to be holy enough to know that I've helped the poor - and generously so…

I want to be holy enough to know that my intentions and desires, my dreams and schemes, are just, pure and honest...

I want to be holy enough to love you with a heart cleansed of selfishness and pride…

I want to be holy enough to recognize my lack of holiness and to ask the help of your grace whenever and wherever I need it...

Just a few days left in Lent, Lord:
a few more chances to be holy in this season of praying, fasting and serving the needs of others...

and then three days of prayer so holy they are but one-day-in-three:
the Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter

Three days inviting me to enter into the mystery of all mysteries, the mystery of Jesus...

Three days to remember with the whole Church how Jesus suffered, died, was buried and rose that we might have life and have it to the full...

Three days that will not come 'round again until a year from now, three days that promise more than I could ever hope to promise in return...

I wish all of you a blessed Easter and a happy break!

On the Church calendar, today, is the Feast of the Annunciation. What is that? Well, if you count 9 months from today you'll find yourself on December 25 - Christmas and the birth of Jesus. This feast celebrates the moment when, with the message from the angel Gabriel, Mary conceived the Christ Child in her womb. Here is how Luke's gospel tells the story:

The angel Gabriel was sent to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. And coming to her, the angel said, "Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High...

Here is a prayer in the spirit of today's feast.

Sometimes, Lord,
my heart aches for a message,
looks for an angel,
strains and listens for
a much-needed word from you...

My heart waits to hear what you speak
to my life and my worries,
my fears and confusion,
my decisions and choices...

My heart waits
for tidings of encouragement
and for a word of wisdom and counsel
to strengthen and empower me,
to guide my way and guard me...

My heart waits to hear you say,
Don't be afraid... I'm with you...
I'm always with you... I'll never leave you...
I'm beside you, before you and behind you,
above you, below you, within you...

My soul strains to hear you say:
You've found favor with me...
I care for you... I care about you...
I watch out for you...
I keep a place in my heart for you,
a place to hold you...
Send me an angel, Lord:
come speak in my heart
the word I need to hear...

Speak to me as you did to Mary:
when I'm not expecting you...
when I'm confused and don't understand...
when I'm not sure what you want of me...
when I'm afraid of what tomorrow may bring...

Fill my heart with your grace, Lord,
to help me welcome every messenger
who comes to speak your word to me,
the word you know I need to hear...
Amen.

A variation on an old Irish prayer-one day late:-)

Good and gracious God,

Give me friends who love me for who I am,
to love in return with all my heart...

Keep burning before my faltering steps
the light you hold on the path I walk...

Keep strong in my heart what faith I have
and help me deepen my trust in you...

May I ever be grateful for the life that's mine
and lean on you when times are hard...

Make me joyful in all the gifts that are mine
and quick to share with those in need...

May I rise every morning to do your will
and may twilight find me peaceful and still...
Amen.

We have exciting high school news! Two of our 8th grade students, Hannah Salameh and Kate Barry, have earned top honors on their entrance exams at Cathedral Catholic High School. And by top honors, I mean perfect scores! And they were two of only seven in ALL students testing to earn this distinction. I'm very proud of these two and all of our 8th graders. We are making quite a name for ourselves at CCHS-5 in the top 20 last year and now 2 of 7 this year!! Wow! I am assuming this means they have been accepted:-) and I look forward to sharing acceptance news regarding all of our graduates with you in the next week or two.

Jr. High Drama class presents the hilarious comedy The Suessification of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Shakespeare meets Dr. Seuss, and the results are lots of fun. The play will be presented to the school next Monday, March 16th at 1:15 in the parish hall. There will also be an evening performance in the hall at 6pm. Please come and watch the junior high students frolic through a silly story about four young lovers, a sprite, fairies, and a love struck funny donkey head. All are welcome!
