Principal's News

"I Walk By Faith"

Happy Ash Wednesday.  It may seem a little strange to offer that greeting, but I believe it is a wonderful day of opportunity for us.  We are given a specific time of encouragement to prepare our hearts for Easter and this is day one.   In Turning Our Hearts to God by Patricia Livingston, we are reminded that Easter is the rising from the dead.  We are challenged to consider what in each of us needs to be raised from the dead.  There are many things that we may need to examine if we are to be open to the Love that will raise us: deadening habits, resentments we haven't let go of, losses not entrusted to healing.  Our prayer may be lifeless.  Our willingness to help those in need may have dried up.  As we make our way together on this Lenten journey, let us believe in the good news.  Let us open ourselves to new life.  (If you would like to see more of these daily reflections, please pick up a copy of the pamphlet in the back of the church.)

Re-registration forms for the academic year 2013-2014 are due back tomorrow, Thursday, February 14th.  Please look them over carefully, complete the registration commitment form and return it with your re-registration fee to the school office.

"I Walk By Faith"

We had a very big day yesterday!  Our new bishop, Bishop Cirilo Flores, joined the North County Cluster principals for a lunch and meeting at St. James.  It was a wonderful opportunity to hear his vision for our diocese and schools as well as many stories from his earlier positions.  He seems to be a man of great faith and at the same time, very "real" and open and thoughtful.  We look forward to great things!

"I Walk By Faith"

Wow!  What an amazing Open House!  Thank you for joining us and for bringing your friends.  We were definitely able to showcase our many gifts and highlight the high standards maintained in our school.  Thank you to Student Council for assisting with the Liturgy.  I had many compliments on their readings at Mass and on the tours they led for prospective families.  Great job Student Council!   A very special thank you to Lisa and Terry Sheehy for our hospitality (along with the Knights of Columbus allowing us to serve their donuts on campus!) and to Mrs. Oldham for the music at our Liturgy.  And thank you to our fantastic faculty and staff for having the school ready for guests and students prepared to shine!

"I Walk By Faith"
Open House, our kick-off to Catholic Schools Week is this Sunday!  Nationally, Catholic schools are noted for their academic excellence and high moral standards. This year during Catholic School's Week we specifically celebrate the constant attention that Catholic educators pay to increasing the learning and growth in faith of all students.  Here at SJA we strive for academic excellence as we continually integrate Christian values of compassion, integrity, and justice and learn to live our faith daily.

Please celebrate St. James Academy and our Open House with us this Sunday.  Our doors are open from 8:30-11:30 for our Open House.  We invite you to join us for a special liturgy in the church at 9a.m. (All SJA students wearing their complete academy uniform and attending 9:00 mass may go to their classroom after mass to receive their free dress pass valid only for Tuesday, January 29th.)  Invite a friend to see this wonderful faith community that is the place for your family to grow both academically and spiritually.

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela

There is much to be excited about around St. James Academy right now!  As we gear up for registration for next year, for our Open House in less than two weeks and for Catholic School’s Week, we are working hard to share the good word on our school.  I hope that you have each had an opportunity to visit our new website!  I appreciate the feedback from many and also appreciate your patience as we tweak the site and you get practice navigating through the new system.  It is also a great time to remind ourselves that at SJA we seek excellence not just in academics but in spiritual and social areas as well.  Faith is not simply taught, it is experienced.  And we offer many opportunities for students to put their faith into action through service and begin to change the world!

I am very hopeful that we will be ready to send re-registration packets for the academic year 2013-2014 home with your students on Friday.   The delay has been caused by the careful consideration we are giving to next year’s budget.  As I hope you all understand, we have been operating at a deficit for the last few years and have been putting off some big facility maintenance projects.  We have also been challenged by many rising costs, including healthcare, which is up almost 40% from 3 years ago and pension costs which will rise another 2% next year.  I offer this as an initial explanation for the serious discussion of the tuition structure for next year.  We are making every effort to help us achieve financial stability while minimizing the financial impact on you, our families.

From the Principal

Our lives are made of days and nights, of seasons and years, for we are part of a universe of suns and moons and planets. We mark ends and we make beginnings and, in all, we praise God for the grace and mercy that fill our days.

Remember us, 0 God; from age to age be our comforter. You have given us the wonder of time, blessings in days and nights, seasons and years.

Bless your children at the turning of the year and fill the months ahead with the bright hope that is ours in the coming of Christ.

You are our God, living and reigning, forever and ever. USCCB

“I Walk By Faith”

Loving Father, help us remember the birth of Jesus that we may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and worship of the wise men. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children, and Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake. Amen

(shared by Janelle Whitton)

I know you all share in the grief of our country with the tragedy in Connecticut. It is difficult to know what to do to help, but at the same time we are fortunate to be people of faith, so we know to pray and pray and pray. As we look forward to this season and time with our families, we pray. We pray in confidence to our God that He is with us and hears our prayer. We pray for the families, friends and community of Sandy Hook that He give comfort and bring healing to them.

I wish each of you the gifts of love, peace and happiness this Christmas. Enjoy the time with your families! I am grateful for each of you. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night for our Christmas program and a celebration of hope.

“I Walk By Faith”

Please join Parents in Prayer tonight for a special rosary in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is a wonderful opportunity to slow down during this busy holiday season and pray with your family. We will meet in the Parish Hall at 7pm. Hot chocolate and cookies to follow:-) During this second week of Advent we continue to prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ's birth. We pray for God's graces and as we hear in the Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe: Teach us to cherish and to care for family and friends.

“I Walk By Faith”

"Advent, this powerful liturgical season that we are beginning, invites us to pause in silence to understand a presence. It is an invitation to understand that the individual events of the day are hints that God is giving us signs of the attention he has for each one of us."

---Pope Benedict VXI, Homily at First Vespers of Advent, November 28, 2009

“I Walk By Faith”

From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops a Prayer for After an Election

God of all nations,
Father of the human family, we give you thanks for the freedom we exercise and the many blessings of democracy we enjoy in these United States of America.
We ask for your protection and guidance for all who devote themselves to the common good, working for justice and peace at home and around the world.
We lift up all our duly elected leaders and public servants, those who will serve us as president, as legislators and judges, those in the military and law enforcement.
Heal us from our differences and unite us, O Lord, with a common purpose, dedication, and commitment to achieve liberty and justice in the years ahead for all people, and especially those who are most vulnerable in our midst. Amen.
